Conformal volumetric modelling
Gyroid and other Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS) often use cubes as units, which requires clipping for free-form areas. This resulted in discontinuous cut surfaces and shapes, making 3D printing difficult. In response, we developed an algorithm that performs appropriate meshing on the volume and solves unique partial differential equations to design structures that are easy to 3D print without clipping.
Metamaterial development as curvature manipulation for arbitrary 3D shapes
We interpret traditional techniques such as origami, kirigami, and smocking as curvature manipulation. By utilizing folds, cuts, and wrinkles as design elements, we developed an inverse problem algorithm that can reproduce 3D shapes that could not be realized with a single piece of fabric using conventional methods.
Cutting-edge fabrication technology including 3D printing and laser cutters
We propose structures and design systems that cannot be realized by conventional methods, utilizing the characteristics of cutting-edge machines.
Parametric modelling of forms and their surface patterns
Rather than drawing forms and patterns one by one, we generate them from rules and parameters. Changing a value regenerates the whole structure, so a design can be explored, carried to other sizes and shapes, and reused for other products.
Surface design without visible distortion on free-form surfaces
A flat pattern laid onto a free-form surface stretches and squeezes with its curvature, and the distortion shows. Our algorithms create structures on free-form surfaces in which visual distortion goes unnoticed.
