alpha-001: an upper gathered from a single cloth
The upper of alpha-001 is made by smocking: a single piece of fabric, gathered and stitched to a rule. Stitched while flat, the cloth curves where the stitches draw it in, and a form rises from it. We treat folds, cuts and gathers like these as ways of shaping curvature, and have developed algorithms that work back from the form we want to the stitches that make it, so that a shape a single cloth could not take by conventional means is raised by cutting and sewing alone.
The folds that give the upper its shape become its pattern, and cast rich shadows; the variation that arises within the rule shows a different face from every angle.
A sole of continuous curved surfaces: the gyroid
The sole is a gyroid structure. The gyroid is a minimal surface that divides space into two intertwined labyrinths, one unbroken curved surface running through the whole.
Such structures are usually laid out in cubes, and fitting them to a free form like a shoe means cutting them off at its edges, where the surfaces break, the shape turns discontinuous and printing becomes difficult. We instead divide the volume to follow the sole and solve our own partial differential equations, so that the structure itself is generated along the shape of the shoe. Unbroken right to its edges, it is 3D printed in TPU.
alpha-002
alpha-002 is a boot defined by its upper, a silhouette pursued through meticulous design. Its sole is the same gyroid structure as alpha-001's, generated along the shape of the shoe.
